What is LinkStar?

LinkStar is a radio designed for use in space that interfaces with the GlobalStar™ satellite network. Typically radios that use the GlobalStar™ network are found in use on oil rigs, shipping containers, gas pipelines and even endangered animals. In addition, they are used for voice communications from urban to remote locations, at sea or in the mountains. We have taken the radio design a step further and developed a radio for use in near-space and in low Earth orbit.

World Wide Converage - 24/7!

The GlobalStar™ network utilizes 32 satellites orbiting 1400 km above the Earth. As a result, there is always at least one GlobalStar™ satellite in the line of sight of the EyeStar radio up to 1200 km, which means your satellite will always be talking to the ground via the GlobalStar™ network to our secure servers!

On April 18, 2014 the EyeStar Simplex radio was flight certified on the TSAT 2U CubeSat Mission. Upon deployment, a signal from the EyeStar Simplex radio was received within 11 seconds of being turned on! We were also able to determine the TSAT's location in orbit to within 5 km without the use of a GPS. Though the satellite was tumbling (there was no attitude control system on the TSAT), 50% of the data packets were received and sent to our ground station servers! Packets were transmitted in bursts of 32 beacons every 5 seconds with a 15 minute dwell time. As of May 9, 2014 over 15,000 data packets have been received!

As part of the TSAT mission the plasma temperature was measured. The map below shows the plasma temperature measured. Data was transmitted with the beacon data from the EyeStar radio. Note the continuous data coverage - from a 2U CubeSat!

Even though EyeStar has been tested on numerous high altitude balloon flights and the TSAT CubeSAT Mission, EyeStar and the new LinkStar radios can be used on small, medium and large satellites and even launch vehicles. LinkStar is a great, low cost way to track assets in space.

Small Enough To Fit within a 1U CubeSAT!

EyeStar provides 24/7 coverage for a range of altitudes up to 1200 km, yet it is small enough to fit in a 1U CubeSAT. The board itself only measures 44 mm x 88 mm and weighs under 25 g. The system itself uses only 200 mW to transmit its data. With our added FRNCS flight computer and optional NovAtel GPS, peak power usage is under 3 W, typically averaging around 2 W

Two Flavors - Simplex and the LinkStar Duplex!

Currently we offer the EyeStar Simplex radio. This allows for "Beacon" mode, transmitting data from 8 analog ports, and 4 digital ports OR TTL protocol data. Beacon and dwell rates can be set before flight, or, using the QuickSAT environment, you can define how the beacon and dwell rate varies based on your mode of operation.

Now to our family of powerful global coverage radios we have added the LinkStar Duplex radio. This provides not only the same basic features of the EyeStar Simplex radio, but also the abilty to send commands to the radio and your satellite, while simultaneously transmitting data. With the LinkStar Duplex radio and our QuickSAT/VMS software environment your satellite becomes a node on the internet! When integrated with the QuickSAT/VMS environment you will be able to monitor historical and live data, monitor vehicle health, and upload virtual payloads and updated flight software to your satellite via the LinkStar radio - all through an easy to use web based interface on your laptop!
